And Juliette’s helmet and scooter were inspired by ‘’Le Pont du Nord’’, clearly. It’s also a very special atmosphere, I wasn’t familiar with Jacques Rivette. For Juliette, I used ‘The truth by Clouzot’, with Brigitte Bardot, who plays a revolted young woman, and ‘’Le Pont du Nord’’ by Jacques Rivette with Pascale Ogier. On the surface, this Disney debacle seems like a no-brainer for the holidays: It’s an 1816 gothic fairytale by E.T.A. Rating explained: "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms" draws its PG rating for some unexpected creepiness and some very brief mild profanity running time: 99 minutes.Slow torture for kids and grownups alike, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms gives a bad name to the very concept of family entertainment. It’s not enough to completely discourage families from taking their kids, but for those wanting a big-screen equivalent of the traditional "Nutcracker" experience, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” could be a surreal disappointment. While “Four Realms” retains its PG rating, audiences might be surprised at all the creepiness mixed in with the more familiar Christmas cheer. The creepy Mouse King - a creature essentially built of hundreds of writhing CGI mice - kicks things off, but there’s plenty of macabre eccentricity to follow, such as a group of clowns that interact like a set of stacking Russian matryoshka dolls. There’s also an effort to diversify the cast and mine a theme of female empowerment, but Hallstrom and Johnston seem more interested in “Four Realms’” spectacle, which is firmly on the Tim Burton end of the visual spectrum. There’s a bit more story to work with - and a twist or two - but the whole thing still feels a little on the thin side. In this version of the story, Clara and her mother are both inventors - very mechanically inclined - and Drosselmeyer is a kindred spirit.Ībandoning the party in search of the key, Clara winds up crossing over into a dazzling fantasyland where she meets a nutcracker guard named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), encounters a creepy creature called the Mouse King and learns that before her passing, her mother was considered a queen. Unfortunately, the special key is missing, so when the family heads out to their godfather Drosselmeyer's (Morgan Freeman) party, Clara seeks his help. (Don’t worry, the nutcracker is still coming.) Louise gets her mother’s favorite dress, Fritz gets a set of wooden soldiers and Clara gets a mysterious silver egg that requires a special key to open. Or, just stick to the sweet and simple “ Buenas!” to say hello at any time of the day. What does it mean and how is it used? Start your sunny Spanish morning off with a cheerful Buenos días, continue with buenas tardes in the evening and end with buenas noches when it’s time to say goodbye or good night. The Spanish will call you out as a guiri for being generally non-Spanish: eating dinner or going out for evening drinks far too early brandishing extra large maps and cameras on city corners talking really loudly at monuments or while out sightseeing wearing denim shorts with flip flops year round and only ordering sangria. Guiris, pronounced “giri”, are (very obvious) foreigners usually hailing from English-speaking countries or central and northern Europe. What does it mean and how is it used? Anyone wanting to blend in in Spain has done their research on how not to look like a guiri. Often due to a saint’s feast day, these “bridges”, become the best Mondays and Fridays of the year! 7. What does it mean and how is it used? Every employee’s favorite – and a stereotype of life in Spain – is the puente, or three-day weekend. Many visitors will quickly learn ¿Qué tal? and our fifth expression is another to add to your small talk toolbox: ❼ómo vas?, literally meaning “How are you going?” 6. These greetings are used casually all day – in small talk, such as when meeting friends, with well-known colleagues, chatting with a clerk at the store – so it’s great to know them. What does it mean and how is it used? Spaniards are a friendly bunch, quick to start up a conversation and armed with several ways to ask the classic “How are you?”. ![]() How do you say it? “Como bas” (Same thing here – the V is pronounced as a B) You can also use these words to call the attention of a friend, as in “ Tío/tía, come here!”) 5. In the same way English speakers use “dude” or “guy” (“Look at those guys over there!” or “Who said that?” “I don’t know, just some dude.”) Spaniards use tío or tía. What does it mean and how is it used? While these literally mean “uncle,” and “aunt,” they’re also used informally to generally refer to another person. Pleading – ¡Vamos, hombre, por favor! (Aww, come on man, please.)Īs a bonus, this isn’t too strange-sounding to English speakers, because English “man” can be used in much the same way. Greeting – ¡Hombre! Cómo estás? (Hey man! How are you?) Yes/Of course – ¡Claro que sí, hombre! (Of course, or definitely) No – “Do you like your boss?” Qué va, hombre, para nada. What does it mean and how is it used? It literally means “man”, and is also used to affirm or strengthen what you’re saying typically to mean no, yes/of course, to greet or to plead. How do you say it? “Ombre” (the H is silent) (“We’re meeting at 11am tomorrow, vale?” or “Call me later to organize that.” Vale, I’ll call you.) After a while in Spain you’ll notice that people tend to use it twice in reply ( vale, vale) which is endearing! 3. It’s used as a way of agreeing or affirming what someone has said. It comes from the verb valer (to be worth, as in ¿cuánto vale? – How much is it?) but means so much more. What does it mean and how is it used? Very much a part of the Spaniards’ vocabulary_,_ meaning OK, alright, sounds good, I understand or no problem. How do you say it? “Bale” (the V turns into a B) Young people pepper their conversations with this adjective, responding to their friends’ stories with a chorus of ¡Qué guay! (“How cool!”) 2. What does it mean and how is it used? It means cool, awesome or great. Thinking about learning Spanish abroad? Make sure you learn these Spanish expressions and use them on anyone and everyone who’ll listen – it’ll impress the locals and ensure that you’ll have a much easier time making friends and fitting in. Spanish is one of the world’s most widely-spoken languages and Castilian (the version spoken in Spain) charms expats and tourists as quickly as the country’s narrow cobblestoned streets and tasty tapas. ![]() ![]() It can also be part of the scene itself, such as if the submissive is roleplaying as a little girl with her daddy (this is called “age play”). For example, a submissive male may start yelping at his domme that she’s not making him smell her feet exactly like he wants. T is for Topping From The Bottom Topping from the bottom refers to when a bottom (sub) gets bratty and tries to control the scene even though negotiations state they should submit. S is for Switch A switch is someone who enjoys both the dominant and submissive role. Another set of guidelines are the “SSC,” which stresses keeping activities “safe, sane, and consensual.” We kinksters want everyone to feel happy and fulfilled, and only experience pain that they desire-without actual harm. L is for Leather The BDSM community enjoys leather as much as you’d expect. Call me a prude, but I wouldn’t advise it on a first Tinder date. Often knife play doesn’t actually involve drawing blood, but is done more for the psychological thrill, such as gliding a knife along a partner’s body to induce an adrenaline rush. It’s considered a form of edgeplay (our parents told us not to play with knives for a reason.) If you do play with knives, do it with someone who truly respects you and whom you trust. K is for Knife Play Knife play is, well, knife sex. It’s a method of restraint, but also an art form. J is for Japanese Bondage The most well-known type of Japanese bondage is Shibari, in which one partner ties up the other in beautiful and intricate patterns using rope. I is for Impact Play Impact play refers to any impact on the body, such as spanking, caning, flogging, slapping, etc. Use it in a sentence: “Please do not pee on me golden showers are one of my hard limits.” Everyone has their own, and you have to discuss these boundaries before any BDSM play. H is for Hard Limits Hard limits are sexual acts that are off-limits. This is not the same thing as a golden shower. ![]() It’s high time for the BDSM community to reclaim this word from Donald Trump, who, may I remind you, allegedly paid sex workers to pee on a bed that Obama slept in out of spite. G is for Golden Showers A golden shower is when you lovingly shower your partner with your piss. Foot fetishists may enjoy worshiping a foot, kissing it, smelling it, massaging it, getting a footjob, licking it, sucking on toes, or ( actually) getting stepped on. There’s often cuddling and always conversation kinksters need love too.į is for Foot Fetish One of the most common fetishes out there, a foot fetish is an attraction-often a need-for feet. BDSM releases endorphins, which can lead to both dominants and submissives experiencing a “drop.” Aftercare can help prevent that. The dominant partner may bring the submissive ice for any bruises, but it’s important to know that aftercare involves emotional care as well as physical. Whatever you're into, just make sure to snuggle and practice lots of aftercare when it's all said and done, especially if anyone involved is a painslut and needs ice after some impact play.Īt press time, “kink” is not a language you can learn on Duolingo, so here’s a handy glossary of some of the most common BDSM terms, from A to Z.Ī is for Aftercare Aftercare is the practice of checking in with one another after a scene (or “play session,” a.k.a., the time in which the BDSM happens) to make sure all parties feel nice and chill about what just went down. Beyond that, there’s a whole language to describe the consensual power exchange practices that take place under the BDSM umbrella. ![]() Since all that terminology can be intimidating for newcomers, let’s start with the basics: “BDSM” stands for bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism-the core pillars of kinky fun.
